Gambling is an activity that involves betting on the outcome of a particular game or event. It can be played by anyone, and there are many different types of gambling. Some forms of gambling are considered to be more dangerous than others.

The earliest evidence of gambling comes from China, where tiles have been unearthed that were used to play a rudimentary game of chance. Other forms of gambling include lotteries, where people pay to enter a lottery and are awarded a prize for winning.

A problem with gambling can lead to financial and social problems, so it’s important to get help if you have an addiction. Treatment can include medication and therapy.

It’s also important to address any underlying mood disorders that are contributing to your gambling problem. These may include depression, anxiety, or substance abuse.

Understanding the harm caused by gambling is a critical step in improving prevention and reducing its impact on individuals, families and communities. However, current harm measurement approaches are limited and lack a robust and inclusive definition of gambling harm.

There is a need to broaden our definition of harm in order to understand the wider impacts of gambling on an individual, family and community level. Consequently, this study aims to develop an international consensus definition of gambling harm that is rooted in public health practice and grounded in a more sensitising conceptualisation of harm.

This was done by examining literature, reviewing and conducting focus groups (n = 35) with professionals who provided gambling treatment, ancillary counselling services or were involved in community education, primary health care, research or the provision of responsible gambling within venues. These interviews were conducted in person and by telephone using a snowball approach to leverage off informal networks.

Findings from the focus groups showed that there were several themes related to gambling that were identified in participants’ experiences of harm. These themes included:

Sense of control and safety

A key theme for some of the participants was their sense of control. This was a reflection of a feeling that they were in control of their future, whether it be a career, relationship or finances.

The concept of safety or security was also identified by some of the participants, which is linked to feelings of confidence in their ability to cope with the consequences of gambling.

Often, these feelings are based on the belief that they have a higher chance of winning money from gambling than they do. This is not true and can be harmful, especially if you have a mental health problem such as anxiety or depression.

It is also important to note that people who gamble are more likely to have a mood disorder, such as depression or bipolar disorder. These conditions can trigger gambling and make it harder to break the habit.
