Some of the most prestigious horse races are held around the world. For example, the Belmont Stakes in the United States is considered the premier American horse race. Another important race is the Melbourne Cup in the Southern Hemisphere. Other prestigious races include the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, the Grand Premio Internacional Carlos Pellegrini in Argentina, and the Grande Premio Sao Paulo Internacional in Brazil.

After the Civil War, speed and racing of fields of horses became more popular. In addition to the classics, there are now the Triple Crown series of elite races. This series is composed of the Betfair Chase, the King George VI Chase, and the Gold Cup.

These races are usually run over longer courses to test a horse’s stamina. The winner of these races receives a trophy.

Although the history of horse racing is complex and difficult to determine, it has been a part of human culture for centuries. The sport has evolved into a global industry and has become a huge part of equine culture. Many famous jockeys and owners have contributed to the sport’s history.

Handicaps are a central component of Thoroughbred horse racing. They allow the owner of the winning horse to receive a purse as an incentive for entering the race. It is also used to allocate weights to all horses to give them an equal opportunity to win.
